An ultrasound-assisted rapid synthesis of meta-terphenyls 9 by the carbanion-induced ring transformation reaction of 6-aryl-5-methyl-2H-pyran-2-ones 7 with functionalized ketones 8 under basic conditions at room temperature has been delineated. The present method gives an easy access to functionally crowded m-terphenyls 9 with notable features including mild reaction condition, remarkable functional groups tolerance, shorter reaction time and high product yields. © 2019, © 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

An efficient metal-free approach for the synthesis of functionalized biaryl-cored diarylmethanes is described by the ring transformation of 2H-pyran-2-ones using 4-phenylbutan-2-one as carbanion source. Moreover, 2H-pyran-2-ones were reacted with 1,3-diphenylacetone in the presence of base to achieve functionalized teraryl-cored diarylmethanes. All the ring transformation reactions were performed under mild reaction conditions to afford the biaryl- and teraryl-cored reaction products in high yields.

Metal-Free Synthesis of Biaryl- and Teraryl-Cored Diarylmethanes by Ring Transformation of 2H-Pyran-2-ones

An alternative route for the synthesis of 2-arylbenzofurans is described by iodine(III)-catalyzed oxidative cyclization of 2-hydroxystilbenes using 10 mol% (diacetoxyiodo)benzene [PhI(OAc)2] as catalyst in the presence of m-chloroperbenzoic acid. The 2-arylbenzofurans were isolated in good to excellent yields.

Hypervalent Iodine(III)-Catalyzed Synthesis of 2-Arylbenzofurans

An elegant approach for the rapid synthesis of β-cyanoepoxides 3 by the epoxidation of β-cyanostyrenes 1 with PIDA 2a is described. The epoxidation of β-cyanostyrenes 1 was performed with 1.2 equiv. of PIDA 2a in MeCN-H2O (1:1) at room temperature in ultrasonic bath. The epoxidation reactions were completed in short reaction time and β-cyanoepoxides 3 were isolated in 69–94% yields. © 2018, © 2018 Taylor &amp; Francis.

Ultrasound-assisted rapid synthesis of β-cyanoepoxides using hypervalent iodine reagents

A metal-free, ultrasound-assisted approach for the synthesis of highly functionalized 2-tetralones in high yields is described. The process involves ring transformation of 2H-pyran-2-ones with the spirocyclic ketone 1,4-cyclohexandione monoethylene ketal to yield spiro­cyclic ketals and subsequent acid-mediated hydrolysis. This protocol is free from any organometallic reagents, is economical and tolerates a wide range of functional groups.
