Application of fused deposition modelling components are gaining popularity in functional application. In order to use these components directly for functional application, reliability in service has to be acheived. A Reliability analysis was caried out on components manufactured by fused deposition modelling. A standard test specimen as per ASTM was prepared and tested for fatigue cycles to failure. Bending stress was calculated prior to the fatigue testing by varying the slice thickness. Fatigue test was carried out with differnt loading condition. Fatigue test results were subjected to weibull analysis to determine the reliability of FDM components. The Weibull design values were calculated and Weibull distribution plot for failure was plotted and analyzed. Estimation of reliabilty for different cycles to failure was also found out.

Reliability of Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) Components on Fatigue Cycles to Failure Using Weibull Analysis

This study is aimed at carrying out a finite element analysis on a roll cage of a vehicle used for student competitions around the world. The design process was carried out using a CAD package and analysis was done using finite element analysis software, ANSYS. Impact test was carried out on the roll cage under different conditions and the effect on the structural members are studied and discussed. The results are very much helpful and assure that the car is in safe condition in case of a crash or accident. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is also carried out with the frame against torsional loading. Two different materials were considered for the analysis. The results of displacement of frame, nodal solution, element solution and bending moment are discussed.

Analysis of a Roll Cage Design against Various Impact Load and Longitudinal Torsion for Safety

This work presents the results of a study carried out to determine the topology of lateral surface and its effect on the process parameters of components manufactured by selective laser sintering (SLS). Using Taguchi’s experimental technique, an orthogonal array of L4 had been developed. Surface roughness was measured along built direction and analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique was used to investigate the effect of process parameters and to identify main process parameter that influences surface roughness on SLS components. It has been found that slice thickness and scan spacing have more significant influence than the laser power. Microstructure of the sintered specimen along the build direction was studied using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). It was observed that variations in slice thickness affect surface topology of SLS components.

A Study on Topology of Lateral Surface of Components Manufactured by Selective Laser Sintering

This work presents the results of a study carried out to determine the sliding wear behavior and its effect on the process parameters of components manufactured by selective laser sintering (SLS). A standard procedure and specimen had been used in the present study to find the wear behavior. Using Taguchi’s experimental technique, an orthogonal array of L4 had been developed. Sliding wear testing using pin-on-disk machine was carried out and analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique was used to investigate the effect of process parameters and to identify the main process parameter that influences the properties of wear behavior on the SLS components. It has been found that scan spacing had more influence on wear as compared to other selected process parameters, slice thickness and infiltration.

Comparison of peripheral dose measurements using Ionization chamber and MOSFET detector

This paper presents a new approach developed for online measurement of fatigue crack growth (FCG) in an aluminium alloy. This paper also demonstrates the use of virtual instrumentation (VI) software that enables such measurement for compact tension (CT), middle tension (MT) and three point bend (TPB) specimens. The FCG is being monitored with the help of compliance-based measurement. For measuring the compliance, crack opening displacement (COD) gauge has been used. The software also performs data acquisition (DAQ) at intervals as crack length changes. The software was developed in LabVIEW 7.1 with implementation using NI's 6014 card. The validation of the software is being done by comparison with actual visual measurements. The author's intention is to use this approach and the software developed for experimental studies in laboratories and for use in typical FCG testing of aerospace, automotive and other components. © Copyright 2008, Inderscience Publishers.
