This paper describes the effect of thermomechanical processing on microstrucural evolution of three alloys, namely Ti-13Nb-13Zr (T1), Ti-20Nb-13Zr (T2) and Ti-20Nb-20Zr (T3), with an objective to develop equiaxed microstructure in all three alloys by subjecting them to appropriate hot-rolling conditions. The alloys were hot-rolled in α + β phase field and then subjected to various heat treatments. Samples from the hot-rolled alloys were subjected to solution treatment (ST) in β and α + β phase fields, respectively, and subsequently aged at different temperatures for the same time interval. Phases evolved on various treatments were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscope and electron probe microscope techniques. The micrographs of the hot-rolled samples of T2 and T3 alloys reveal fine equiaxed structure; on the other hand, a mixture of equiaxed and elongated a phase is observed in alloy T1. X-ray diffraction analysis of the β ST and water-quenched samples clearly exhibits the formation of α′ in T1 alloy and, α′, α″and β phases in T2 and T3 alloys. However, α″phase is observed for T1 alloy only in α + β ST condition. X-ray diffraction analysis of T3 sample subjected to β ST and aging at 400 C reveals the presence of to phase. The presence of higher amount of Nb and Zr should have resulted in the formation of ω phase in the T3 alloy at low-temperature aging. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Effect of thermomechanical processing on evolution of various phases in Ti-Nb-Zr alloys

This work reports the effect of heat treatment on the corrosion behavior of Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy in Ringer's solution. The microstructural evolution of various phases after beta solution treatment (βST) and alpha + beta solution treatment (α+β ST), is studied using optical microscope, electron probe microanalysis and XRD techniques. Corrosion behavior of the solution treated samples is studied in Ringer's solution using open circuit potential-time measurements and cyclic polarization. Corrosion studies reveal that, the heat-treated samples with depletion of Nb to very high levels in alpha phase exhibit inferior corrosion behavior. Amongst all the heat-treated samples investigated, the water quenched α+β ST specimen exhibit superior corrosion resistance due to the even distribution of the alloying elements in the three phases, namely α,α″ and β. © 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Influence of microstructure and alloying elements on corrosion behavior of Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy

This work describes the effect of mechanical working and heat treatment on the microstructure of the alloy Ti-13Nb-13Zr using X-ray diffraction and metallography. Lattice parameters of the constituent phases in as cast and different heat-treated conditions have been calculated. The β solution treatment and water quenching (WQ) results in the α′ martensite while the α + β solution treatment and WQ leads to three-phase microstructures consisting of α″, α and β. Only α and β phases are observed under aged condition irrespective of the prior solution treatment conditions. The effect of various heat-treatments on the hardness of the alloy has been presented. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
