Flexible flow-shop scheduling problem (FFSP) is an extended special case of basic flow-shop scheduling problem (FSP). FFSP is treated as complex NP-hard scheduling problem. A good scheduling practice enables the manufacturer to compete effectively in the market place. An efficient schedule should address multiple conflicting objectives so that customer satisfaction can be improved. In this work, a novel approach based on teaching-learning-based optimisation (TLBO) technique incorporated with maximum deviation theory (MDT) is applied to generate schedules that simultaneously optimise conflicting objective measures like makespan and flowtime. Results indicate that the proposed multi-objective TLBO (MOTLBO) outperforms non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) and multi-objective particle swarm optimisation (MOPSO) in majority of the problem instances.

Solving multi-objective flexible flow-shop scheduling problem using teaching-learning-based optimization embedded with maximum deviation theory

Additive manufacturing (AM) of auxetic structure is gaining prominence for various fields ranging from structural material to biomaterials. This work proposes a novel design of the auxetic structure with regular honeycomb, i.e. hybrid auxetic structure. Additionally, a sharp corner of the auxetic structure is replaced with a fillet feature to stiffen the structure by suppressing the hinging mechanism. All models are fabricated in extrusion-based AM technique using Polylactic acid (PLA) material. A comparison study was carried out on 3D printed samples that were subjected to uniaxial tensile load. To understand the effect on functional and mechanical properties, a tool path strategy with single-pass and zigzag tool paths was proposed. Solid material properties were used in finite element analysis (FEA) to compare with experimental results. Experimental results indicate that hybrid structure takes more load than auxetic structure. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of the hybrid structure was 32% more than that of the auxetic structure. The finite element results are in good agreement with the experimental results. The observation reported in this article will help frame design rules and selection of AM processes for applications ranging from structural protection sandwich constructions with low-density cores to tissue engineering and regenerative medicine scaffolds.

Investigation on Mechanical Properties of Additive Manufactured Hybrid Auxetic Structure

Allium sativum fiber has a high cellulose content of 69.82% and a low density of 1.32 g/cc. In the present study, various chemical treatments, namely, alkaline, benzoylation, and acetylation were carried out to enhance its properties. The effect of chemical treatments on the fiber and its effect on various properties of the brake pad is studied. Allium sativum raw fiber (ASRaw), alkaline-treated (ASa), benzoylation-treated (ASb), and acetylation treated-fibers (ASac) were reinforced for about 8 wt.% in the brake pads that were manufactured using compression molding and named as AS1, AS2, AS3, and AS4, respectively. The thermal degradation of the fiber is evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and is observed the thermal stability from 340°C to 359°C, 360°C, and 378°C, respectively. From X-ray diffraction (XRD), it was found that acetylation-treated fiber had shown a crystallinity index (CI) of 35.86% with a tensile strength of 723.28 ± 2.7 MPa. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to study the organic substance behavior and surface morphology. The physical, thermal, and mechanical properties of the brake pads were carried out as per industrial standards. © 2020, © 2020 Taylor &amp; Francis.
