The objective of the present work is to investigate the formation of intermetallic compounds such as iron aluminides and oxides during the formation of an alloy by melting commercially pure aluminium (Al) billets and adding iron powder (Fe) at 750 °C in the molten aluminium. The exothermic reaction during the addition of ‘Fe’ in the molten ‘Al’ resulted in the formation of more amounts of intermetallic compounds because of the rise in temperature. The composition of the ‘Al’ and ‘Fe’ powder was varied to obtain various alloys. The optical microscopy examination revealed the presence of various intermetallic compounds and oxides in the matrix. The Rockwell hardness survey performed on various samples exhibited a maximum hardness value of 79 in ‘B’ scale for the alloy composition of 60% Al and 40% Fe. A maximum shear strength of 288 Mpa was obtained for the samples containing 65% Al and 35% Fe. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Manufacture, Mechanical Properties and Microstructural Characterization of Aluminium and Iron Metal Matrix Composite Manufactured

Natural fiber-based composite materials have found wide applications in Automotive, Aerospace, and Marine Industries. The current study presents the composite preparation, mechanical characterization, and machining behavior of hybrid composite. The fabricated hybrid composite consists of natural fibers (hemp and flax), resin (epoxy and hardener), and S-2304 wire mesh of different orientations (45° and 90°). The mechanical characterization was performed through tensile, flexural, impact, and hardness with ASTM samples. The FRW45 hybrid composite had shown an excellent tensile strength of 43 MPa and 31.57% higher than that of FRW90. Moreover, the FRW45 (82 MPa) flexural strength has shown better results than the HRW45 (76 MPa) composite. The machining performance was studied by drilling experiments, designed by the central composite design (CCD) to study the significant input parameters such as type of composite, speed, and feed rate. The obtained results revealed that torque reduces with the enhancement in feed rate for all types of composites. It was also noticed that at 500 rpm spindle speed, the delamination factor was comparatively 35.03% lower in HRW45 and 58% in HRW90 compared to HR composite. The fiber fracture voids and delamination failures were observed through fractography analysis. © The Author(s) 2021.

Effect of S-2304 wire-mesh angle in hemp/flax composite on mechanical and twist drilling surface response analysis

The purpose of this paper is to deal with the tradeoff that exists between the green consumer behavior and sustainable product features. The relation between them is complex and less explored. The mutual relationship between them involves various concepts, so this study makes use of the existing tool called hybrid multi-criterion decision-making (MCDM) method to prioritize the factors influencing sustainable product design in the context of green consumer behavior. The hybrid MCDM method AHP–ELECTRE II technique was used in this study to investigate the relationship between the green consumer behavior and sustainable product features. The practical applicability of this method was also proven in this paper using a case study done in an automotive manufacturing organization. Further the study reveals the most important determinants that a green consumer would look for while purchasing any product or service. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Prioritization of Factors Influencing Sustainable Product Design in the Context of Green Consumer Behavior Using Hybrid AHP–ELECTRE II: A Case Study

Designing products considering logistic costs and improved customer service in the field of supply chain management is termed as design for logistics (DfL). By improving the design of the products for logistics, organizations can reduce the costs spend on logistic and delivery. Some of the critical factors of adopting DfL are ease of transport, ease of packaging, ease of loading/unloading, minimize logistic cost, and so on. To improve the DfL characteristics at the product design stage, five strategies, namely flat packaging strategy, design for non-circular subparts, modular design principles, and design for ease of fabrication, have been identified. Quality function deployment (QFD) approach, a successful method often used for new product development, was used in the selection of strategies for designing products from a logistics viewpoint. The results of QFD show that flat packaging strategy and ease of handling are the critical DfL strategies for the improvement of logistics characteristics of the product at the design stage.
