Earlier decades have observed an expeditious increase in the evolution of harder and complex to cut materials. Abrasive water jet machining is one of the novel nontraditional cutting processes that found diverse applications in machining different kinds of difficult-to-machine materials. It is a commercial process for heat sensible materials, which are difficult to machine by heat generated machining techniques. Process parameters play an important role in finding the economics of machining process at good quality. This research focused on the comparative prediction of responses during AWJ machining of granite using response surface methodology and desirability approach. MRR and surface roughness are considered as responses which will decide the quality of machining process. Experiments were carried out according to RSM design. RSM is adopted for prediction of responses in order to compare experimental values. Dual Response Surface and Desirability Approach for Modeling and Optimization of Abrasive Water Jet Machining Process

The Aluminum metal matrix with particulate reinforcements is the new future of the coming industrial revolution due to the higher strength and availability. Composite reinforcements such as SiC, TiB2, B4C, and others contribute significantly to the increased strength of the Aluminum metal matrix, which can be an optimal choice, also at a lower cost, in some applications where Aluminum is considered or proven to withstand high temperatures. Ultrasonic welding is the process, where, we get the electrical energy, which converts and amplifies into vibration energy for the welding to occur. The challenge we face today is the thickness limitations in ultrasonic welding. The ultrasonic welding of the Aluminum metal sheet with the reinforcements may affect it, as the addition of particulate reinforcements will increase the strength of the Aluminum matrix. Ultrasonic welding can only support a metal sheet with a thickness of up to 2.5 mm in the case of an Aluminum plain sheet. However, if the strength of the Aluminum metal matrix increases, the next step is to achieve ultrasonic welding with the same thickness of Aluminum matrix and reinforced composites that have greater strength than a standard Aluminum sheet. The precipitation effects on the mechanical behavior of electron beam welded joints of Inconel 625 in the as-welded [AW] and post-weld heat treatment [PWHT] conditions have been investigated in this research study. A PWHT comprising of direct aging [DA] treatment at 700 °C for 100 h in vacuum at a pressure of 10−5 mbar was performed on the weld joints. The microstructure of the base alloy opined the precipitation of MC system carbides and γ′′ strengthening phase after subjecting to DA. Also, Nb–Mo rich precipitates and the Laves phase was noticed in the inter-dendritic arms of the fusion zone (FZ) of welded joints in the AW conditions. DA treatment has a notable effect on the weld mechanical characteristics of Inconel 625 joints. The precipitation of γ′′ strengthening phase is reasoned for the significant rise in the yield strength [YS] and tensile strength [TS] of the base alloy and EBW joints. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.

Effect of grain boundary precipitation on the mechanical integrity of EBW joints of Inconel 625

The dissimilar welds joint of 2.25Cr-1Mo steel and lean duplex LDX2101 steel was prepared using the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) process and employing the Inconel 617 filler. The microstructural stability of the dissimilar welds joint (DWJ) was studied using the optical microscope and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) for as-welded (AW) and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) condition. The PWHT was employed at 760 °C (PW 1) and 810 °C (PW 2) for 2 h of duration. The application of the heat-treatment resulted in the formation of the soft zone at the interface of weld metal and HAZ in 2.25 Cr-1Mo side, i.e., low Cr side. The mechanical behavior of the DWJs was also studied for AW and PWHT condition. A measurable change in the width and hardness of the soft and hard zones was measured with an increase in PWHT temperature. For weld metal, the minimum average hardness was measured 237 HV in AW and a maximum of 248 HV for PW 2. In the AW condition, the average CIT of the weld metal was measured 46.5 ± 3.5 J, which meets the minimum recommended value as per EN 1557:1999 standards. The PWHT showed a drastic reduction in CIT and a minimum of 34 ± 3 J was measured for PW 2. The CIT of the 2.25Cr-1Mo HAZ (notch adjacent to fusion boundary includes the soft ferrite region) was measured 45 ± 5 J in AW and get increased drastically after the PWHT and maximum was measured for PW 2 (86 ± 5 J). © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

Characterization of the soft zone in dissimilar welds joint of 2.25Cr-1Mo and lean duplex LDX2101 steel

The research work has focused on identifying the influence of pulsed gas metal arc welding (PGMAW) parameters on the austenitic stainless steel (ASS) weld bead on high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel plate. The effect of pulse parameters such as dimensionless factor (ϕ), mean current (Im), and heat input (Ω) has been analyzed on the thermal behavior of weld, weld pool geometry, and the weld bead microstructure. The influence of ϕ on the thermal and metal transfer behaviors has been also examined to produce the desired weld bead quality. The optimized pulse parameters such as Im (160–230 A), Ω (6.5–11.2 kJ/cm), ϕ (0.05–0.25), and welding speed (S) (15–25 cm/min) have been considered to perform the experiment. The microstructural evaluation of the weld bead was carried out by an optical microscope. The enhanced Im from 160 A to 230 A considerably increased the amount of temperature received by the weld pool (QT) from 4525 to 6525 J/S. The results also depicted that the increase of ϕ from 0.05 to 0.25 predominantly reduced the width of the weld bead (Wb) from 15 to 13.5 mm, depth of penetration (Pd) from 3.5 to 2.5 mm, and area of fusion (Af) from 40 to 30 mm2, respectively. It is also found that the formation of fine-grain microstructure in the weld deposit primarily happened due to the effect of thermal behaviors such as QT, transfer of heat content from filler to weld pool (Qf), and characteristics of filler metal transfer to the weld deposition. © 2020, The Indian Institute of Metals - IIM.

Thermal and Weld Bead Characteristics of Bead-on-Plate PGMA Welding of Dissimilar ASS Bead on HSLA Plate

Friction stir welding (FSW) is an innovative technique to produce a hybrid joint of thermoplastic polymers and metals in the recent past. A review of the friction stir welding processes and fabrication of polymer-based nanocomposites was developed to meet the challenges of the industry’s needs in the twenty-first century. These hybrid structures predominantly will play a vital role in future innovations. In the recent past, it is widely used in the automobile and aerospace sectors. It is due to its lightweight and high strength-to-weight ratio. This article focuses on the recent development that has been made in the joining of thermoplastic polymers and metals through the friction stir welding technique and friction stir processes. This article provides a comprehensive study of the influences of various process parameters on weld performance. The effect of surface pretreatment on the adhesive mechanisms is presented. Finally, mechanical behavior like hardness and tensile strength of joints, and the microstructural features of joints are presented.
