The utilization of combination of different mineral admixtures like fly ash (FA), alcoffine (ALC) and nano silica (NS) which are by-products from industries possess pozzalanic nature and is an environmental friendly material in construction industry. The environmental impact can be minimized by making use of many industrial by products in a sustainable manner. The evaluation of strength and durability study was performed using on concrete with FA, ALC and NS as a partial replacement of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). The studied parameters were compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength, as well as the durability study that involves water absorption and sorptivity. The combination of FA 25%, ALC 10% and NS 0, 0.5, 1, 2 and 3% was used in partial substitution of cement at by weight. The results show that among different NS content High performance concrete containing 25%-10%-1% FA-AL-NS exhibited the best results for the strength and durability property tests at 7, 28 days for strength and 28, 90 days for durability properties. © BEIESP.

Experimental study on the strength and durability of high performance nano silica concrete

Nowadays, the quantity of Waste Marble Powder (WMP) as a waste material is significantly increased in India and is not fit for the environment. Therefore, the main objective is to utilize this WMP in Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) as a filler material. This was done in keeping the view the requirements of fines in the SCC and to find out effective utilization of waste marble powder. Fine aggregate is partially replaced by WMP. Five mixes were prepared, one without WMP and other four with varying amounts of WMP. The fresh concrete properties of SCC were measured by slump flow test, T50 cm, J-Ring test, V-funnel test, and L-Box test and the hardened concrete properties of SCC were tested for compressive strength test, splitting tensile test, flexural strength test and modulus of elasticity. It was found waste WMP can be replaced as filler material in developing the SCC and WMP helps us to reduce the total voids content in concrete. Finally, it showed a good correlation between fresh concrete properties and hardened concrete properties for SCC. © 2019, Institute of Advanced Scientific Research, Inc. All rights reserved.

Effect of waste marble powder as filler material on fresh and hardened properties of self-compacting concrete

Flood Forecasting is a complex procedure because of its uncertainty nature. This problem can be solved by using machine learning techniques. Also short term forecasting with higher accuracy is critical at peak values. Hence, in the current study, using Extreme Gradient Boosting, a rainfall - runoff model has been demonstrated for Kolar Basin, Madhya Pradesh, India. Hourly data of Rainfall and Discharge from 1987-1989 were collected and used for forecasting floods for one to 5 hours ahead. Performance of the model is evaluated using four metrics: Nash Sutcliffe efficiency (NS), Percentage Bias (PBIAS), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Coefficient of determination (R2). From the values of the above measures the proposed method has been compared with the Random Forest Model and Support Vector Machine, in which the proposed method shows high accuracy when compared to the existing methods of short-term flood forecasting. The results of this study ensures that Extreme Gradient Boosting method outperforms the Random Forest and Support Vector Machine in terms of Accuracy. © IAEME Publication.

Temperature and Vegetation Indices Based Surface Soil Moisture Estimation: A Remote Sensing Data Approach

A new design method, Direct Strength Method (DSM), has been introduced by researchers in recent years for calculating the ultimate design strength of cold-formed steel sections. DSM is basically a stress-based approach, wherein the strength of the section is reduced to take care of buckling effects. The ultimate strengths corresponding to three buckling modes, local, distortional, and global modes are distinguished in DSM, in which the elastic buckling stresses are determined using analytical expressions or by using numerical methods like finite element, finite strip, or spline finite strip method. A finite strip computational procedure for evaluating the critical elastic buckling stresses has been proposed in the present study. Also, decomposition of buckling modes into pure modes can be performed using the formulation. This formulation has been validated for a range of cross-sectional dimensions under uniaxial compression and flexure and can be used as a design utility for IS 801 based on DSM. © 2019, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Twlight-iitm—a computational utility for elastic buckling stress predictions of cold-formed steel elements

Aesthetics of a structure are given primary importance in the present days and this demands new and challenging designs with large spans and complicated designs. The role of a structural engineer becomes more significant because of these structural irregularities. This makes it necessary to have advanced technologies like post-tensioning if we are not ready to compromise in the aesthetics. Generation of such irregular structures will form varying mass and stiffness distribution which imparts to the effect of torsion. This paper deals with the various structural behaviour of a multi-storied RC Convention Centre building having large spans of around 32 m. The effect on the structure due to these large spans is compared with both RC and prestressed concrete. The roof slab of the auditorium portion of the structure is designed with normal RCC and compared with Slabs resting on Prestressed Post-tensioned Girders using the software Adapt Builder 2016. A comparative study between RCC and prestressed concrete is also done. Diaphragm action of the structure is considered for seismic design in order to provide a monolithic action and hence to counteract the effect of torsion. A comparative study is done with and without considering the effect of torsion into account and the results shows that in higher seismic zones the effect of torsion is predominant and proper care should be given to extreme columns and corner columns which are more vulnerable to failure. Response spectrum analysis of the structure is done in STAAD.Pro and storey response plots are obtained. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2019.

Comparative Study on Various Behaviours of an RC Structure with Prestressed Concrete Structure

The contribution of the research is to study carbonation process of shell lime mortar on addition of organics. Lime mortar of binder to aggregate ratio 1:3 with addition of Kadukkai (Terminalia Chebula), Jaggery (Unrefined sugar) and combined Kadukkai and Jaggery, in an amount of 1Â kg, 3Â kg and 0.5Â kgÂ +Â 1.5Â kg respectively per 10Â L of water have been used, where the influence of organics towards development of strength and durability is well identified to suggest the use in lime construction. Traditional phenolphthalein test was conducted to measure the carbonation depth and thermo gravimetric analysis with differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA) was used to verify the degree of carbonation and carbonation profile of lime mortar specimen. On fermentation, the organics reduce to carbon-di-oxide within the mortar, altering the hydrated phases and also resulting in more formation of load bearing forms of calcite (calcium carbonate). XRD results interpret the hydrated phases such as Calcite, Calcium-Silicate-Hydrate (CSH) and Calcium-Aluminate-Hydrate (CAH) of the organic modified mortars under carbonation and it is in confirmation with TGA. © 2019, RILEM.

Study on Carbonation Initiated by Organics in Traditional Lime Mortar

This paper reports a study of the gaseous emissions from Indian forest fires from 2005 to 2016 and their potential impact on radiative forcing. Initially, forest burned area is quantified using MODIS-MCD45A1 data. Results showed that annual burned area of the study period ranges from 8439 km2 to 25,442 km2 and the maximum forest area is burned during February, March, and April in any year. Gaseous emissions are estimated using emission factors, the mass of fuel available for combustion, combustion factor, and burned area. CO2, CO, and CH4 are the major emissions during forest fires with an annual average of 105 × 106 tonnes, 6 × 106 tonnes, and 3.25 × 105 tonnes, respectively. The average radiative forcing (RF) for CO2, CH4, and N2O is estimated as 1.8 Wm−2, 0.49 Wm−2, and 0.177 Wm−2, respectively. Assessment of gaseous emissions and radiative forcing in Indian forest fires

The present study has made an emphasis for comparing the strength characteristics of ferrocement panels with panels made with HDPE geogrids. Also, an attempt has been made to replace cement partially by silica fume; which is a by-product obtained from the production of silicon and ferrosilicon alloys in the electric arc furnaces. The rise in the cost of river sand used as fine aggregate in concrete has increased the cost of construction significantly in the past few decades. Foundry Sand, which is obtained from the Foundry Industries are treated as waste materials that have the recycling capability in concrete and it is been proposed for partially replacing sand in this study. Different mix proportions using the above materials have been made and panels were prepared for optimum proportion based on the compressive and tensile strength of cube and cylinder specimens. Panels with two layers of steel mesh and geogrid mesh were cast. A comparative study on strength characteristics has been made and failure patterns of the panels have been studied. It was shown that strength of geogrid panels was on par with ferrocement panels and are advantageous to ferrocement panels in corrosion resistance and elasticity

Effect of Silica Fume and Foundry waste sand on strength characteristics of Geogrid and Ferro cement panel

Blended Concrete (BC) is environmental friendly concrete and could be considered as a construction material to promote the sustainable development. In this paper mineral admixture like Fly ash (FA), Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) and Alccofine (AL) were used with different combinations in different dosages as replacement for cement. Effects of varying dosages of mineral admixture, was studied for compressive strength of BC. Initially, the cement was replaced with FA and GGBS separately at 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, 35% and 40%. The optimum percentage of FA and GGBS replacements were evaluated by the compressive strength. Keeping this optimum percentage of FA and GGBS as constant, further replacement of cement was done by AL at 6%, 8%, 10%, 12%, 14% and 16%. The study concludes that BC in the combination of FA and AL can be used for the general purpose of concrete as required compressive strength can be achieved. But the concrete with combination of GGBS and AL would not be useful in the formation of BC as the combination had failed to achieve the design strength and it had been clearly observed that as the AL percentage increases the compressive strength decreased. © BEIESP.
