Introduction

The School of Mechanical Engineering (formerly known as School of Mechanical and Building Sciences) is amongst the premier schools of VIT that started functioning right from 2010. Over the years, the school has contributed immensely in shaping the new generation of mechanical engineers and that made VIT as one among the best mechanical engineering colleges in Chennai and India.

The school has got a team of highly qualified faculty members, many holding PhDs from the elite institutes across the globe, to teach and train the best minds of this country. The school is long known for its interdisciplinary approach in teaching and research and that reflects in the multidisciplinary programs offered by the school which was well appreciated by the students and industries. The school offers two bachelor’s degree programs namely B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering and B. Tech. in Mechatronics and Automation. The school also offers two postgraduate level programs namely M. Tech. in CAD/CAM and M. Tech. in Mechatronics.

The pride of the school lies in the significant research funding received from several government agencies and private agencies such as DST, DRDO, MNRE, CSIR, CVRDE, CPDO, IE, AR&DB, CVRDE, BRNS, ISRO, UGC, NRB, AICTE, and Assault Systems La Foundation, etc., Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with various industry and research organizations and leading universities. The school has modern facilities, enabling cutting edge research in a wide spectrum of technological areas. The school actively assists local industries in product design, complex-part manufacturing, and other competent areas. The courses offered by the school cater to the needs of aerospace, defense, manufacturing, energy, and automotive industries. This has enabled the students to pursue higher studies in leading universities in India and abroad. The B. Tech. Mechanical Engineering Program offered by the school is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.
