Single crystal of sodium bismuth titanate Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3&nbsp;(NBT) has been grown by a high-temperature flux growth method. The mechanical properties of polished single crystal plates were investigated. The Vickers microhardness, (Hv) number of the NBT crystals was found to be ∼3. The fracture toughness and brittleness index of the single crystal were calculated from R-curve is 0.15166MNm−3/2&nbsp;and 276&nbsp;m−1/2, respectively. Domain structure and birefringence of &lt;001&gt;&nbsp;pc&nbsp;cut NBT single crystal have been analyzed using polarized light microscopy. At room temperature, a stripe-like dark and bright domain pattern have been observed with preferred orientation along &lt;110&gt; direction having birefringence value of 2&nbsp;×&nbsp;10−3. With increasing temperature, birefringence was found to decrease with the disappearance of stripe-like pattern near 225&nbsp;°C. However, with further increase in temperature, the stripe-like pattern re-appears above 240&nbsp;°C with polarization reversal. On cooling similar behavior was observed near 205&nbsp;°C. These results are in concurrence with the dielectric/piezoelectric measurements, and unusual behavior of domains was attributed to the ferroelectric→ferroelastic transition in NBT.

Growth, mechanical and domain structure studies of Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 single crystal grown by flux growth method

The growth of inorganic zinc di-magnesium chloro sulphate (ZDMCS) nonlinear optical material from low temperature evaporation technique at ambient temperature has been reported. The dimension of harvested crystal is 28×10×2&nbsp;mm3 and is possess rectangular shape morphology. The single crystal X-ray diffraction studies confirmed that the grown crystal belongs to the system of trigonal. The S-Cl stretching vibrations and Mg2+ ions present in the sample were observed by FTIR spectrometer. The cut-off wavelength of the grown crystal is about 203&nbsp;nm is found by UV–visible absorption spectrum. The nonlinear optical efficiency was determined by powder Kurtz Perry technique. EDAX spectrum confirms the presence of elements within the material. Dielectric nature of the sample was analyzed for the frequency range 50&nbsp;Hz to 5&nbsp;MHz at different temperatures. The mechanical behaviour of the title compound was investigated using Vicker's microhardness tester. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd.

Crystallization of inorganic nonlinear optical zinc di-magnesium chloro sulphate (ZDMCS) single crystal

Single phase Gadolinium orthoferrite (GdFeO3) with orthorhombic perovskite structure was synthesized without any garnet impurities by solid state reaction and subsequently GdFeO3 single crystals were grown by the optical floating zone technique. The temperature dependent magnetization measurement revealed the magnetic phase transition from anti-ferromagnetic ordering to paramagnetic ordering at 670&nbsp;K. The overlapping of the magnetization measured under zero-field and field cooling condition in the range of 300–20&nbsp;K signifies that there is no magnetic transition in this temperature range. The hysteresis loop measurements revealed that in comparison to the values reported for the crystal grown in oxygen, the air grown sample exhibits one order lower coercive field (∼75&nbsp;Oe). The Bloch 3/2-law was found to hold good for GdFeO3 with the value of B-parameter as 2.69&nbsp;×&nbsp;10−5&nbsp;K−3/2. The coercivity exhibited sharp dip at 200 and 550&nbsp;K. At and above 550&nbsp;K the ability of the antiferromagnetic ordering to pin the direction of magnetization related to the weak ferromagnetism present in the material vanishes leading to the lowering in the coercivity.
