High performance gas diffusion electrodes for PEMFC

Abstract
A method of fabrication of electrodes for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) is provided incorporating the TBA+ form of the ionomer in the process. In this method the ionomer ink is directly spread on the backing layer. This is then hot pressed onto the ionomer membrane to give a Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA). This method increases the utilisation efficiency of the catalyst thereby giving good performance to the MEA in PEMFC. Performances of the order of 1 mA/cm2 at 0.5 V under ambient pressure and 333 K were obtained. This method can be adapted for large area MEA fabrication.
