Heterogeneous wireless networks are an integration of two different networks. For better performance, connections are to be exchanged among the different networks using seamless Vertical Handoff. The evolutionary algorithm of invasive weed optimization algorithm popularly known as the IWO has been used in this paper, to solve the Vertical Handoff (VHO) and Horizontal Handoff (HHO) problems. This integer coded algorithm is based on the colonizing behavior of weed plants and has been developed to optimize the system load and reduce the battery <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/electric-power-utilization">power consumption</a> of the Mobile Node (MN). Constraints such as Receiver Signal Strength (RSS), battery lifetime, mobility, load and so on are taken into account. Individual as well as a combination of a number of factors are considered during decision process to make it more effective. This paper brings out the novel method of IWO algorithm for decision making during Vertical Handoff. Therefore the proposed VHO decision making algorithm is compared with the existing SSF and OPTG methods.

Seamless Vertical Handoff using Invasive Weed Optimization (IWO) algorithm for heterogeneous wireless networks

In this study, the heterogeneous wireless network is considered. Obviously, it is an integration of two different access networks, namely cellular and WLAN. In the heterogeneous wireless networks, handoff is an important process when the user moves from one network (3G) to another network (WLAN). While the user is moving, the mobile nodes (MN) move within the coverage area of WLAN and 3G with different velocities. When user migrates between heterogeneous networks, for best performance, the seamless vertical handoff (VHO) is very essential. In this paper, we propose a modified optimization (M-OPTG) based VHO or horizontal handoff (HHO) algorithm for the heterogeneous wireless networks. The performance of M-OPTG algorithm with load, battery life time, velocity and call dropping analysis have been investigated. Some of the existing VHO or HHO algorithms provide only analytical results. In this paper, we have developed a real time study using network simulator to choose the appropriate network for providing service to a MN. Our proposed (M-OPTG) VHO or HHO algorithm provides better performance on the basis of battery life time, load balancing, call dropping probability and minimizes the number of handoffs based on the velocity of the MN. The Modified OPTG algorithm not only improves the collective battery life time of a MN, but also reduces the call dropping probability and unnecessary handover.

Modified handoff algorithm for providing optimization in heterogeneous wireless networks

In this paper, we present an efficient data channel assignment (DCA) scheme for a mixed cell (i.e., a 3G cell with embedded WLANs). Our effort is essential to increase the data request (i.e., a call) handling capacity in 3G systems, with a ‘low request dropping probability’. In UMTS-first DCA scheme prefers 3G channel in dual coverage and reduces vertical handoffs from 3G to WLAN. But it deprives some users of high speed service of WLAN even when WLAN facility is available. On the contrary, a WLAN-first DCA scheme overcomes this problem by preferring WLAN system. But the overall call request dropping probability increases with increasing WLAN traffic and at some point, the benefit of WLAN cannot be achieved in a mixed cell. Further, most of the existing models do not consider the reality of non-identical WLAN-hotspots and bidirectional vertical handoffs, restricting the free mobility of the users across 3G and WLAN systems. We propose an improved DCA scheme based on WLAN-first access technique to maximize the usage of WLAN. The proposed model considers the reality of non-identical WLAN-hotspots and allows free mobility between 3G and WLAN. A proposed DCA scheme improves the dropping probability as blocked call request of WLAN are transferred to 3G. Our DCA scheme drops a request only when all the channels of both 3G and WLAN systems are busy. We derive an analytical model for proposed scheme and validate the same with a set of simulation results. We provide an extensive number of numerical results to show that our scheme performs far better than the existing models. The DCA modeling approach can be quite conveniently used for better planning of WLAN hotspots in the mixed cell. © 2015, Springer Science+Business Media New York.
