Solvent-free, microwave-induced condensation of 2-aminoaryl alkyl ketones and ethyl 3-oxobutanoate in the presence of amberlite Na sr1L gave quinolinones in high yield when compared to other catalysts. Further, N-alkylation of the quinolinones was carried out effectively with various halides using amberlite Na sr1L. An N-alkylated quinolinone exhibited enhanced activities against B. subtilis, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa, similar to standard drug ampicillin. Two compounds showed effective activity against S. aureus, and one resulted in moderate activity against E. coli. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

One-pot three-component reaction of substituted aromatic aldehydes, 2-cyanoacetamide and 4-hydroxycoumarin in the presence of Montmorillonite-KSF (MKSF) in ethanol results in the formation of pyrano[3,2-c]chromene-3-carboxylates (5a-m) has been described. The reaction was tested in different alcohols, afforded pyrano [3,2-c] chromene-3-carboxylates (5a-m) of the corresponding alcohols in good yield. The mechanism reveals that the alcohol (as solvent) plays a major role in the inter conversion of amide to the corresponding esters with Montmorillonite KSF (M-KSF) as a catalyst. Excellent yields, inexpensive and readily available substrates, environmentally benign reaction condition, shorter reaction time, and easy workup are the major advantageous features of this protocol. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

Montmorillonite-KSF mediated one step synthesis of pyranochromene derivatives

In the present work, we have designed and synthesized novel indolyl-4H-chromene-phenylprop-2-en-1-one derivatives (5a–o) using Amberlite SR1L Na (150 mg) as catalyst at 60 °C in DMSO. For the first time, a series of 2-alkoxy-2H-chromen chalcones (3a–h) are prepared by reacting 1-(2-ethoxy-2-methyl-2H-chromen-3yl)ethan-1-one with various substituted aldehydes in the presence of 20% ethanolic sodium hydroxide. After optimizing the reaction conditions, the synthesized chalcones (3a–h) were further reacted with various indoles (4a–b) via regioselective nucleophilic substitution to yield the corresponding derivatives (5a–o) in excellent yields by C[sbnd]C coupling reaction and confirmed by 1H, 13C NMR HRMS and UV–Visible spectroscopy analysis. The employed synthetic route offered several advantages such as simple reaction conditions, easy handling, short reaction time, environmentally benign, and reusability of the catalyst. The synthesized compounds (5a–o) was studied for their solvatochromic property with increasing polarity of solvents. The compounds (5a–o) were evaluated for their antioxidant activity by free radical screening using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. Also, their in-vitro antibacterial activity has been investigated against gram positive (S. aureus and B. subtilis) and gram negative bacteria (Klebsiella and E. coli) by agar well technique. Among the compounds employed, 5g and 5h not only showed promising antioxidant activity but also significant antibacterial activity against S. aureus compared to the experimental standards. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract: The 2-chloro-3-formyl quinolines 1, were chemoselectivity and effectively converted into their corresponding 2-chloroquinolinyl-4-quinolinones 3 through Knoevenagel condensation/aza-Michael addition utilizing TiO2 nanoparticles. The Sonogashira coupling of 2-chloroquinolinyl moiety of the quinolinone, 3 gave unprecedented cyclised products 1,6-naphthyridines, 5 through cascade reaction in good yields and purity. One-pot three-component protocol for the synthesis of indolyl-4H-chromene-3-carboxamides as antioxidant and antibacterial agents

A simple, efficient and rapid method for clay-catalyzed Knoevenagel condensation of heterocyclic aldehydes with active methylene compound under reflux condition is reported. This protocol offers high yield, shorter time and simple work procedure. Montmorillonite-KSF-catalyzed synthesis of 4-heteroarylidene-N-arylhomophthalimides by Knoevenagel condensation

An efficient and regioselective N-alkylation of 4(3H)-pyrimidone with various electrophiles in the presence of Fe nano particle is reported. The catalyst initiates N-alkylation of amides by alkyl chlorides. The reaction of equimolar 4(3H)-pyrimidone and 2-chloro-3-(chloromethyl)quinolines in the presence of KOH and Fe nano particle (5 mol %) in DMSO solution under reflux condition formed 3-[(2-chloroquinolin-3-yl]methyl)pyrimidin-4(3H)ones. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.
