A new molecular adduct namely, 4-(dimethylamino)benzaldehyde 4-nitrophenol (4DMAB4NP), has been synthesized through crystal engineering route by reacting 4-(dimethylamino)benzaldehyde and 4-nitrophenol in equimolar ratio. This hydrogen bonded material is found to have crystallized with centrosymmetric space group of P21/c at room temperature (RT) and making it appropriate for third order nonlinear optical (TONLO) applications. The different kinds of functional groups existing in the 4DMAB4NP were recorded and assigned through FTIR and NMR spectral studies. Thermal behavior of 4DMAB4NP was analyzed through TGA and DTA analyses. Its solubility in toluene solvent was measured to obtain high quality single crystals. The 4DMAB4NP single crystals were characterized for their laser damage threshold, TONLO properties and optical limiting behavior. Further, the dielectric behavior of 4DMAB4NP single crystal were also investigated as a function of temperature (313–343 K). In addition, density functional studies of 4DMAB4NP molecule in gaseous phase were accomplished at the B3LYP/6–311++G (d, p) basis function. Finally, 3-D Hirshfeld surface maps and the 2-D fingerprint diagram were generated for the title molecule by using crystal explorer 3.1 program. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

A New Nonlinear Optical Stilbazolium Family Crystal of (E)-1-Ethyl-2-(4-nitrostyryl) Pyridin-1-ium Iodide: Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Its Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Properties

An organic conjugated chromophore DL-mandelic acid (DLMA) single crystal was synthesized and grown-up by means of slow evaporation technique. Single crystal X-ray diffraction study proclaimed that the DLMA crystal crystallized in monoclinic system with centrosymmetric space group P21/c. The various characteristic fundamental vibration frequencies were identified by FTIR spectroscopic studies. UV–visible spectral analysis concluded that the lower cut-off wavelength and calculated direct optical band gap of DLMA as 257 nm and 5.40 eV respectively. Thermal property of DL-mandelic acid was established through thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetric technique. The electric field response of DLMA crystal was investigated from the dielectric studies at a few selected temperatures and frequencies. The quantum chemical assessments such as HOMO-LUMO, molecular electrostatic potential and NLO activity were calculated and presented. In order to determine mechanical strength of DLMA crystal for various loads using Vickers microhardness tester. The real and imaginary parts of the third-order susceptibility (χ3) were evaluated with the Z-scan technique using closed and open signatures respectively and was found to be Re (χ3) = 4.15 × 10−6 esu and Im (χ3) = 0.47 × 10−6 esu. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Growth and characterization of dl -Mandelic acid (C 6 H 5 CH(OH)CO 2 H) single crystal for third-order nonlinear optical applications

The organic third-order non-linear optical crystal HSPI, a new derivative of the stilbazolium family, was successfully synthesized and the optical quality single crystal was grown by a slow evaporation technique for the first time.
