Biological scientists work with bioinformatics algorithms that are either computational or data intensive in nature. Distributed platforms such as Grids and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks can be used for such algorithms. Classical Grid Computing platforms are available only to a restricted group of biologist, since they are expensive, and require skilled professionals for deployment and maintenance. Projects deployed using volunteer computing systems require a high visibility. The alternative, peer-to-peer platform is mainly used for sharing data. This paper presents the Mini-Grid Framework, a P2P infrastructure and programming framework for distribution of computational tasks like bioinformatics algorithm. The framework contributes with concepts and technologies for minimal configuration by non-technical end-users, a 'resource-push' auction approach for dynamic task distribution, and context modeling of tasks and resources in order to handle volatile execution environment. The efficiency of the infrastructure has been evaluated using experiments. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The Mini-Grid Framework: Application programming support for Ad-Hoc, Peer-To-Peer volunteer Grids

Matching resources is a fundamental problem within large scale distributed environments such as Grid for which the critical process is resource discovery and description. An effective way of solving this problem is providing meta-data about the resources. Ontologies can be used to capture metadata information. Ontologies determine the terms of Grid entities, resources, capabilities and the relationships between them with meaning by the addition of ontological annotations. In this paper we present the initial design of resource description ontology. This ontology can be used for solving resource matching for Grid using semantic web technologies. © 2007 IEEE.

Semantic Resource Description for Grid

Community Information Systems (CIS) 1 is the best place to share the information related to common interest of communities [1]. The requirement of better infrastructure in terms of huge storage space, computational resources and better bandwidth is the bottleneck for effective utilization of community-based systems. CIS spread over different geographical regions portrays region specific information. Networking of CIS and their distributed content resources help in development of communities through knowledge sharing, get acquainted about geographically diversified communities having similar interests and reduce the requirement of sophisticated infrastructure. The new developments in algorithms related to formation of virtual communities, distributed resource-sharing, content replication using peer-to-peer techniques provides better solution for the interconnection of geographically distributed CIS. The aim of this paper is to describe the design and development of scalable, fault tolerant, community aware content networking framework, in order to support interconnection of CIS using JXTA [2] Peer-to-Peer framework. Application developers can use this framework to establish a network of information systems using peer-to-peer techniques. © 2006 IEEE.

Design and development of community aware distributed content networking framework using JXTA

We present the design and implementation of our functionality based networkmanagement prototype. The uniqueness of our prototype lies in the three-layered weakly distributed hierarchical architecture; functionalities based networkmanagement approach, and Inference Engine. Tasks such as polling, trap handling and log processing are distributed and segregated that reduces the consumption of networkband-width and processing load. The top-level manager and the middle level managers workcooperatively and provide intelligence, greater autonomy and automation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.
