Aluminium alloy metal matrix composites (MMCs) have obtained wide spread acceptance in automotive and aerospace applications because of its high strength, low density and good structural rigidity. This work studies the mechanical and microstructural properties of hybrid metal matrix composite reinforced with Al2O3/SiC prepared by using powder metallurgy technique. Hardness and compressive strength of aluminum matrix composite increased with increase in wt% of SiC. The characterization results showed the improvement in mechanical properties with addition of hybrid reinforcement. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Experimental investigations on mechanical and microstructural properties of Al2O3/SiC reinforced hybrid metal matrix composite

Aluminum matrix composite currently used in engineering applications due to their desirable combination of properties. Development of aluminium matrix composite has become an essential area of research interest in material science. Aluminium based graphene composite are finding increased application in electrical, automobile and aerospace applications because of its light weight. In this present work dealt with mechanical and microstructure properties AA8030 reinforced with 5 different wt% of Graphene. The bottom pouring stir casting machine was used to fabricate AA8030-Graphene composite. Fabricated samples were tested according to the ASTM standard. The microstructure and mechanical properties such as hardness, tensile strength, flexural strength of fabricated samples were evaluated. © 2019 Author(s).

Effect of graphene reinforcement on mechanical and microstructure behavior of AA8030/graphene composites fabricated by stir casting technique

Currently, Aluminium (Al) 6061 material is used in Automobile and industry applications, Al 6061 matrix material gives good formability with excellent mechanical properties. Reinforcement of distribution is a major problem in some casting methods and to overcome this casting problem, squeeze casting technique was used in this research work, where Aluminium 6061 act as a matrix material and SiCp was used with different volume percentage. The effects of volume in ractions of reinforcements on the composite properties were investigated. The micro structural characterization results revealed a homogenous distribution of SiC particles in the matrix, which is almost free of pores can be obtained by squeeze casting method. The mechanical characterization revealed that the density, hardness and impact energy of composites increased while increasing the percent volume fractions of SiC particles. © TJPRC Pvt. Ltd.

An Experimental Investigation on Mechanical Behaviour of SiCp Reinforced Al 6061 MMC using Squeeze Casting Process

Metal matrix composites have been developed and are being used across all segments of the industry due to its advantages of higher specific strength, Young's modulus and enhanced wear properties. However the development of MMC through powder processing poses problems in achieving the required interface strength and near theoretical density especially during sintering. This paper is intended to understand the influence of processing parameters on the mechanical properties like sintered density and micro hardness. It has been observed that the compacting pressure and reinforcement percentage have higher impact than the sintering temperature on microhardness and density. Further to evaluate the fracture resistance strength, sintered composites have been subjected to static ball indentation. It has been observed that higher reinforcement and compacting pressure enhance the failure load while sintering temperature and time exert constrained influence. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Experimental evaluation of the influence of processing parameters on the mechanical properties of SiC particle reinforced AA6061 aluminium alloy matrix composite by powder processing

Cordierite-TiO2 composite (5-20 wt.%) ceramics for various stoichiometric compositions were synthesised using conventional techniques with standard raw materials. The green composite ceramic samples obtained were dried at 100 C for 12 h, followed by pre-sintering at 800 C for 3 h. The powders were dry milled for 2 h and then compacted at 240 MPa to form pellets. The sample pellets were sintered at temperatures in the range of 600-1300 C for 3 h. The study of the different phases of the samples was performed using X-ray diffraction. The poor mechanical properties of cordierite have attracted the use of TiO2 as a dopant. A study on the influence of TiO2 addition to flexural strength, fracture toughness, hardness, bulk density and thermal expansion was performed. Vickers hardness value of the cordierite-TiO2 composites of 6.46 GPa is higher than other compositions of cordierite. The cordierite-TiO2 exhibited a fracture toughness of 3.28 MPa m1/2. The flexural strength of the cordierite-TiO2 was 158.47 MPa. The effect of thermal expansion was very low in the cordierite-TiO2. Studies using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope imaging on samples sintered at 1300 C confirmed the presence of cordierite, along with small amounts of rutile and cristobalite. © 2013 Brazilian Metallurgical, Materials and Mining Association.
