The School of Mechanical Engineering (SMEC) is amongst the premier schools of VIT, Chennai The SMEC has faculty members with a majority (90%) of them having doctoral degree from eminent institutions across the globe The school offers B Tech programme in Mechanical Engineering, M Tech programmes in CAD/CAM and Mechatronics and the research-based degree programmes: M Tech (By Research) and Ph D in various contemporary topics The courses offered cater to the needs in the fields of aerospace, defense, manufacturing, energy and automotive industries The school has modern facilities, enabling cutting edge research in a wide spectrum of technological areas This has enabled the students in acquiring required skills to excel in their fields of interest The B Tech Mechanical Engineering programme is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET The students from the school are highly successful in getting excellent opportunities to join industry, having their own start-ups, or in pursuing higher studies in leading universities in India and abroad
The school actively assists local industries in various fields such as product design, analysis, rapid prototyping and complex-part manufacturing To promulgate research and placement activities, several initiatives are taken to collaborate with leading industries and reputed institutes in India and abroad To name a few, SMEC has initiated collaboration with prestigious industries like Valeo India Pvt Ltd , Daimler India Commercial Vehicles Pvt Ltd , Larsen & Toubro (L&T) India, Ramco Industries Limited, Mahindra & Mahindra, SFL, Gabriel India, Patterson, Southern Electronics and the institutions like Dublin City University, Dublin, Ireland, etc The school actively associates itself with the nearby industries in its regular practice which includes die and mold making, complex part manufacturing, rapid prototyping, developing new mechanisms and reverse engineering applications
The school endeavors into catering the latest explosion of knowledge and developments in various fields of Mechanical Engineering for the benefit of executives and other working professionals in various business and industrial organizations, faculty and student community of educational institutions and public at large, by sharing expertise and organizing regular well planned and job oriented part-time and full-time short duration programs
