Abstract
Reducing the weight of the vehicle is most important to increase fuel efficiency. Hence all vehicle manufacturers seek alternative light weight materials instead of conventional heavy materials. Bumper is one of the main part which are used as protection for passengers from front and rear accidents. The aim of this study was to analyze the structure and material employed for car bumper manufacture. It is necessary to consider material, structures, shapes and impact conditions for design and analysis of the bumper beam in order to improve the crash worthiness. The material chosen for this research is Long fiber reinforced thermoplastics (LFRT) and impact testing were done by high velocity centre pole frontal impact as per Federation of motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS). The selected materials and design are compared to each other to find the best material with highest material strength and structure design using experimental and by finite element analysis (FEA). Design and Simulation are done using CAD software like Pro-E, Hyper Mesh and LSDYNA. The comparisons were done to prove the long fiber reinforced thermoplastic can replace the existing thermoplastic bumpers like glass mat thermoplastic (GMT) and sheet molding compound (SMC).
