Abstract
The automotive industry carries out lot of research works to increase the fuel efficiency of the vehicle by reducing its weight. This can be achieved by replacing heavy metal castings and sheet metal fabricated or formed parts with plastics made from injection molding process. These parts need to withstand the loads, the wear and tear and also the different environmental conditions. This work is on one such part used as an instrument panel cover in vehicles. Mold flow coupled with design of experiments (DOE) approach is used to optimize the molding parameters. The influences of injection time, melt temperature and mold temperature on the molded part quality are studied.
