Energy is important criteria in determining the world's economy. The increasing demand on energy due to industrialisation, population growth and rise of living standards have led to considerable use of fossil fuels. Biodiesel proves to be a good alternative for fossil fuels. But the feasibility of biodiesel is the major factor for determining it as an alternate fuel for CI engines.The selection of suitable biodiesel with the appropriate blend for the IC engine plays a vital role in the energy sector. The objective of this study to identify the apt fuel blend using FAHP-PROMETHHE. FAHP method is applied to find the relative weights of the criteria, while PROMETHEE has been used to identify the best alternatives. NOx, Smoke, HC, CO, CO2, BTE, EGT, ID, CD and MRPR were considered as the assessment criteria. The increasing demand on energy due to population growth and rise of living standards has led to considerable use of fossil fuels which cause environmental pollution and depletion of fossil fuels. Biodiesel proves to be a good alternative for fossil fuels. But sustainability of biodiesel is the key factor for determining it as a fuel in diesel engines. It needs identification of proper blend of biodiesel and diesel to meet the efficiency, engine suitability and environmental acceptability. Alternative fuel blend evaluation in IC engine fuel technologies is a very important strategic decision tool involving balancing between a number of criteria such as performance, emission and combustion parameters and opinions from different decision maker of IC engine experts. Hence, it is a MCDM problem. This paper describes the application of hybrid Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) techniques for the selection of optimum biodiesel blend in IC engine. FAHP-TOPSIS, FAHP-VIKOR and FAHP-ELECTRE, are the three methods that are used to evaluate the best blend. The performances of these MCDM methods are also compared with each other. Here, FAHP is used to determine the relative weights of the criteria, whereas TOPSIS, VIKOR and ELECTRE are used for obtaining the final ranking of alternatives. A single cylinder, constant speed and direct injection diesel engine with a rated output of 4.4 kW is used for exploratory analysis of evaluation criteria at different load conditions. Diesel, B20, B40, B60, B80 and B100 fuel blends are prepared by varying the proportion of biodiesel. Similarly, Brake thermal efficiency (BTE), Exhaust gas temperature (EGT), Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx), Smoke, Hydrocarbon (HC), Carbon monoxide (CO), Carbon dioxide (CO2), Ignition Delay, Combustion Duration and Maximum Rate of Pressure Rise are considered as the evaluation criteria. The ranking of alternatives obtained by FAHP-TOPSIS, FAHP-VIKOR and FAHP-ELECTRE are B20 &gt; Diesel &gt; B40 &gt; B60 &gt; B80 &gt; B100 for 21°bTDC and 24°bTDC and Diesel &gt; B20 &gt; B40 &gt; B60 &gt; B80 &gt; B100 for 27°bTDC. It shows that B20 is ranked first for 21°bTDC and 24°bTDC and second for 27°bTDC injection timing. Hence, it is concluded that mixing 20% biodiesel with diesel is suggested as a good replacement for diesel. This paper provides a new insight of applying MCDM techniques to evaluate the best fuel blend by decision makers such as engine manufactures and R&amp;D engineers to meet the fuel economy and emission norms to empower green revolution. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

Compression ignition engine performance modelling using hybrid MCDM techniques for the selection of optimum fish oil biodiesel blend at different injection timings

Alternative fuel blend evaluation in IC engine fuel technologies is a very important strategic decision involving decisions balancing within a number of criteria and opinions from different decision maker of IC engine experts. The selection of appropriate source of biodiesel and proper blending of biodiesel plays a major role in alternate energy production. This paper describes an application of hybrid Multi Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) technique for the selection of optimum biodiesel blend in the IC engine. The proposed model, Analytical Network Process (ANP) is integrated with Technique for Order Performance by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) to evaluate the optimum blend. Here the ANP is used to determine the relative weights of the criteria, whereas TOPSIS is used for obtaining the final ranking of alternative blends. An efficient pair-wise comparison process and ranking of alternatives can be achieved for optimum blend selection through the integration of ANP and TOPSIS. The obtained preference order for the blends are as B20 &gt; B40 &gt; Diesel &gt; B60 &gt; B80 &gt; B100. Selection of optimum fish oil fuel blend to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions in an IC engine—A hybrid multiple criteria decision aid approach

The present study investigates the potential of Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) to predict the performance, combustion and exhaust emissions of the Compression Ignition (CI) engine at different injection timings (21°, 24°, 27°bTDC) using fish oil biodiesel. The experimental investigations are carried out on a single cylinder constant speed direct injection diesel engine under variable load conditions. Here Multi Input Multi Output (MIMO) fuzzy models are developed, trained and validated to predict the parameters like Brake Thermal Efficiency (BTE), Hydrocarbon (HC), Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT), Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx), Carbon monoxide (CO), Smoke, Carbon dioxide (CO2), Ignition Delay (ID), Combustion Delay (CD) and Maximum Rate of Pressure Rise (MRPR) with the experimental performance data sets using Trapezoidal membership function. The developed MIMO fuzzy model is capable of predicting the performance, emissions and combustion parameters of the engine with better correlation coefficients in the range of 0.946-0.999, mean absolute percentage error in the range of 0.06-4.5% with noticeably low root mean square errors. The validation results confirm the applicability of the developed FIS models with high degree of accuracy and minimum time demand that can effectively replace the costly and time consuming real life experiments and trails. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Prediction of CI engine performance, emission and combustion characteristics using fish oil as a biodiesel at different injection timing using fuzzy logic

The thirst for fuel is steadily increasing as technology continues to open new areas of exploration. At the same time, the indiscriminate extraction of fossil fuels also may result in extinction of petroleum deposits in foreseeable future. Along with this, pollutant emission from diesel engines causes major impacts on ecological systems. In order to overcome the above problems associated with the use of petroleum derived fuels, a suitable source of biodiesel should be used to replace conventional diesel fuel. Hence, in this work, feasibility of using biodiesel prepared from fish oil was investigated. Various properties such as viscosity, density, calorific value, flash point and cetane value of biodiesel and biodiesel-diesel blends of different proportions were investigated. Later, experimental tests were carried out to evaluate the performance, emission and combustion characteristics of a single cylinder, constant speed, direct injection diesel engine using biodiesel-diesel blends, under variable load conditions. It was found that there was a reduction in NOx, HC and CO emission along with a marginal increase of CO 2 and smoke emissions with the increase in biodiesel proportion in the fuel. The brake thermal efficiency was found to be higher compared to diesel for the entire load. An analysis of the cylinder pressure rise, heat release, and other combustion parameters such as peak pressure, rate of pressure rise, combustion duration and ignition delay was carried out. The ignition delay, maximum heat release rate and combustion duration were lower for biodiesel-diesel blends compared to diesel. Ultimately, fish oil can indeed become the appropriate source for biodiesel, with environmental benefits. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
