Objectives: The main objective of this paper to review the various currently available Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems for the Polymer Composites particularly in aviation industries. Methods: This paper provides a complete overview about the various types of damage detection technique currently used for the polymer composite structure and also highlights the concept behind the each technique. A brief overview of the research work on experimental and theoretical studies on the various SHM systems is considered and several research papers on these topics are cited. This paper reviews various recent advancement made in the field of damage monitoring techniques, particularly the Piezoresistivity technique with the advent of nanomaterials. Outcomes: This paper serves as an effective source of literature for those interested in pursuing research in the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) System for the polymer Composites. This paper also provides an effective source of information about the possible research gap in the field the SHM.

The polymer composites are extensively used as advanced materials for various engineering applications such as aviation, marine, automobile and civil structures because of its unique superior properties. The anisotropic nature of the composite makes it as a complicated material to predict strain and damage induced in it under the real-time loading. In order to improve safety and reliability of these composite materials, the real-time strain induced in the composite needs to monitor continuously. With that focus, nanoparticles such as reduced graphene oxide and nano-nickel-coated glass fibre are fabricated and characterised for damage sensing application for the polymer composites reported in this work. The concept of embedding nanoparticles-coated glass fibres in an array of rows and columns as damage sensor is demonstrated by studying its real-time piezoresistive response under medium-velocity impact. When embedded composites are subjected to impact, the corresponding row and column sensor show variation in the piezoresistance. Thus, by monitoring the piezoresistance of the coated glass fibre, the damage and its location can be predicted. Thus, localisation and degree of damage induced in the polymer composites can be predicted by monitoring the piezoresistance of the embedded glass fibre under impact loading. © The Author(s) 2018.

Nanoparticles-coated glass fibre–based damage localisation and monitoring system for polymer composites

Glass fibre reinforced polymer composites are extensively used as an advanced engineering material, particularly in aviation industries because of its superior properties. Unlike metals, damage and failure of the composites are complicated to predict under real-time loading due to its anisotropic nature. With that focus, reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) based Structural Health Monitoring for polymer composite is proposed in this work. The prioritised aim of this study is to measure the strain induced and the degree of damage accumulated in the composites. To achieve this, the rGO coated glass fibres are embedded into polymer composite to evaluate the strain and damage induced in the composites by measuring the fractional change in the piezoresistance of the coated fibre. The piezoresistive response of the coated fibres showed linear variation under low (elastic) deformation. However, under high (plastic) deformation, the piezoresistance varied nonlinearly with an irregular stepped increment. This nonlinear stepped increment is marked due to the initiation and propagation microcracks in the polymer composites. The damage accumulation in the composite is predicted by measuring the deviation of piezoresistance from the elastic response line using statistical analysis. A statistical correlation is established between the damage accumulation and the experimentally calculated residual strength. The electromechanical study on the rGO coated glass fibres suggested as potential applications for the strain and damage monitoring of composite materials. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd
