The present study deals with the determination of physical and chemical parameters in the treatment process of waste water by flocculation and coagulation processes using natural coagulants and assessing their feasibility for water treatment by comparing the performance with each other and with a synthetic coagulant. Initial studies were done on the synthetic waste water to determine the optimal pH and dosage, the activity of natural coagulant, followed by the real effluent from tannery waste. The raw tannery effluent was bluish-black in colour, mildly basic in nature, with high COD 4000mg/l and turbidity in the range 700NTU, was diluted and dosed with organic coagulants, AloeVera, MoringaOleifera and Cactus (O.ficus-indica). The study observed that coagulant Moringa Oleifera of 15 mg/L dose at 6 pH gave the best reduction efficiencies for major physicochemical parameters followed by Aloe Vera and Cactus under identical conditions. The study reveals that the untreated tannery effluents can be treated with environmental confirmative naturally occurring coagulants. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Treatment of waste water by coagulation and flocculation using biomaterials

The objective of this study is to use municipal dry waste, plant waste and saw dust collected from various sources to make particle boards with each individual item as well as a combination of these in various ratios. Since most of the previous studies done are by making use of fibers, the present work focuses on finding the properties of the board without the use of fibers. The physical and mechanical properties of these boards are then determined by using a series of tests like moisture content test, water absorption properties, thickness swelling, tensile test, compressive test and flexural strength. The results are then compared and most of the samples are found to comply with the IS standards. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Effect of Liquid Viscosity and Solid Inventory on Hydrodynamics in a Liquid - solid Circulating Fluidized Bed

The successful design and operation of solid-liquid agitators require proper prediction of critical impeller speed (Njs) needed to suspend solids. It depends on system and impeller geometry as well as the properties of both solid and liquid. In this research, the effect of impeller blade thickness on Njs required for complete suspension of solid particles was discussed. Experiments were performed in an agitated vessel of 0.29 m diameter with three impellers namely Rushton turbine (RT), Pitched blade turbine (PBT) and A320 impeller. The impeller thickness was varied as 1, 2, 3 and 4 mm. The results showed that with the increase in impeller blade thickness, the critical impeller speed decreased significantly and the power required for complete suspension increased. Modifications are made in the Zwietering correlation by considering the effect of the impeller blade thickness to improve the prediction of critical impeller speed. © 2017 ALMA MATER Publishing House, “VASILE ALECSANDRI” University of Bacău. Effect of impeller blade thickness on critical impeller speed in an agitated vessel

In this work process simulations are performed for UNIDAK process for the production of naphthalene. As a part of that to do simulations for the process, UNIDAK process is designed in ASPEN PLUS v9.0 simulation user interface. To assess the environmental impacts of the developed process, potential environmental impacts of constituent chemicals are calculated using Waste reduction algorithm (WAR). Engineering economic evaluation is performed using ASPEN ECONOMIC ANALYZER v9.0 which inherently contains the cost of the consumed energy as an operating cost. For the designed process energy analysis is done using ASPEN ENERGY ANALYZER v9.0. From the retrofit analysis studies 63.27% of the energy savings reported. HEN (Heat Exchanger Network) is developed for the base case process and retrofit studies are performed to improve the process efficiency. One heat exchanger is added to the base case HEN which enhanced the process efficiency by 16% with a payback period of 0.3 years. Energy efficient process reduced total potential environmental index (PEI) to 99.9% compa red to the Base case process.

Top Down Activation Enhancement of Bentonite for the Removal of Emulsified Oil from Wastewater

The effect of impeller clearance and liquid level on the critical impeller speed (Njs) for various radial and axial flow impellers in 0.29 m ID agitated vessel has been studied. Five types of radial impellers: Rushton turbine (RT), Straight blade (SB), Curved blade (CB), Curved blade with disc (CBWD) and R130 impeller and four types of axial impellers: Rushton turbine 45o angle (RT 45), Pitched blade (PBT), A320 and HE3 impeller were used. Tap water and resin particle of 0.506 mm were used as liquid and solid phases, respectively. The impeller clearance to vessel diameter (T) was varied between 0.17 and 0.41. The liquid level (H) was also varied as H/T=0.5, H/T=0.75 and H/T=1. The R130 impeller and A320 impeller was found to be more efficient among radial and axial impellers respectively. A new expression for Zwietering constant 'S' was developed to predict critical impeller speed, considering impeller clearance and liquid level for all the impellers. The results obtained here show that the 'S' values increase with increase in clearance, and decrease with liquid level for all impellers and it also depends on the type of impeller.
