This research focuses primarily on the ontology and adaptability of various tools and technologies for the post-COVID (2019 novel coronavirus) scenario in Civil Engineering Education (CEE). Initially, a gamut of tools and technologies used in Civil Engineering education is discerned. The applicability and versatility (flexibility in adaptation) of these tools and technologies are thoroughly studied for post-COVID scenarios and the suitability of the same is perceived. In this research, five major technologies such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Online Study System (OSS) comprises Micro and Macro Learning, Structured and Unstructured Learning including storytelling, gamification is instantiated for Civil Engineering Education. Comprehensive analogies of these technologies are exemplified to reinforce the applicability and adaptability in post-COVID CEE.

THE PRAGMATISM OF TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTSPOST-COVID IN CIVIL ENGINEERING EDUCATION

This paper represents the parametric effects on slump and compressive strength of aluminosilicate based Geopolymer concrete using by Taguchi method. A total of nine mix proportions were considered to evaluate the effect of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution, Solution/Binder (SB) ratio and the percentage of superplasticizer. Results indicated that the highest slump of 165 mm and 28 days compressive strength of 68.37 MPa was obtained for aluminosilicate based Geopolymer concrete with the superplasticizer, Solution to Binder (SB) ratio and extra water) parameters. By using the selected (Signal-to-Noise (SN) ratio graphs, the best combination of parameters for slump and compressive strength properties was also obtained. The mix with the best combination of parameters was considered and partially replaced with silica fume and rice husk ash. The inclusion of additional silica (in form of silica fume and rice husk ash as Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS) replacement), most significantly influenced the slump and compressive strength properties. © 2021, Materials and Energy Research Center. Parametric effects on slump and compressive strength properties of geopolymer concrete using taguchi method

The performance of novel Layered Two Stage Fibrous Composite slabs (LTSFC) was pioneered under falling mass collisions using a combined experimental and numerical study. Such LTSFC slabs consist of three layers with and without the insertion of glass fibre mesh between the layers. LTSFC techniques were used to fabricate the composite slabs with three layers including 3%, 1.5%, and 3% of fibre content for the top, middle, and bottom layers respectively. Sixteen MLPAFC square slabs were cast with only short hooked end fibres and tested under falling mass collisions by amending two parameters namely the type of support (fixed and hinge) and support layout. Two distinct support layouts on two types of support were considered and tested with and without the glass fibre mesh between layers of LTSFC. A glass fibre mesh was introduced between the three layers to block crack growth propagation and absorb additional collision energy. The glass fibre mesh insertion between the layers and the LTSFC production technique were considered as novel modifications. A numerical study using Auto desk Fusion 360 was conducted and compared with experimental results. The numerical results showed fair agreement with the experimental test results. Based on the validated numerical models, collision energy and cracking pattern evolution were studied. The findings indicated that the glass fibre mesh insertion between the layers combined with steel fibres disrupted crack proliferation, thus exhibiting superior engrossed collision energy and postponing crack growth. Additionally, the engrossed collision energy at crack initiation and ultimate crack for the slabs with four sides fixed and hinged support were greater with respect to two opposite sides fixed and hinged support. Numerical values were in reasonable agreement with the experimental values in terms of collision energy and cracking patterns. © 2020

Impact response of novel layered two stage fibrous composite slabs with different support type

This research aimed to study the impact response of topology optimized hammerhead pier beam (HPB) based on the density approach. The HPB is prepared with the concept of preplaced aggregate fibrous concrete (PAFC) comprising two primary approaches; first, the coarse aggregate and fiber are prepacked into the designed formwork. Second, the gaps between the aggregate and fiber are filled with cement grout. In this work, an attempt has been made to study an impact response of HPB made with PAFC. Five HPBs were prepared and strengthened with steel fibers with two different schemes, Firstly, the HPB was reinforced with a full cross-section at 2 and 4% of steel fiber, while another set of beams were only reinforced in the tension zone with the same amount of fibers. The study parameters included compressive strength, impact strength, impact ductility index, number of main and secondary cracks, and failure pattern. It was observed that the PAFC had an increase in compressive strength up to 56.9%, compared with nonfibred concrete. A fully fibered concrete beam with 4% fiber addition was the best at taking impact, and the initial crack and failures were observed at 2725.1 J and 3009.8 J, respectively, compared with non-fibered and tension zone fibered concrete beams. Compressive local damage and transverse flexural cracks were observed, which had caused initial cracks and final failure. The HPB with a full reinforced scheme at 4% dosage exhibited higher impact strength than the normal concrete and beam reinforced only in the tension zone. © 2021 by the authors. Impact response of preplaced aggregate fibrous concrete hammerhead pier beam designed with topology optimization

The objective of this study is to investigate the moment-rotation behaviour of the extended end plate long bolted moment connection using numerical, experimental and component method approaches. Totally thirty six models of the cold formed steel beam-column (hollow and concrete filled column) connection with different arrangement of long bolts are modeled and analysed using the finite element software ANSYS APDL. The cross-sectional dimension of the column and beam section is 50 mm × 100 mm × 2 mm. The length of column and beam section is 900 mm and 700 mm, respectively. The end plate size is 100 mm × 150 mm × 2.5 mm/4.0 mm and 6 mm diameter long bolts are used to connect the members in the joint. It is observed that the increase in the number of bolts increases the initial rotational stiffness and design moment capacity of the connections significantly. Substantial enhancement in the initial rotational stiffness and design moment capacity of the connection is achieved by using concrete fill in the column. From the experimental validation, it is noticed that the finite element models satisfactorily predict the actual behaviour of the extended end plate bolted moment connections. Also the initial rotational stiffness of the connections is determined based on the component method as specified in Euro Code 3(BS EN 1993-1-1 2005, BS EN 1993-1-8 2005) and the results indicate that the predictions based on the proposed analytical model agree well with the simulation model. © 2021, Korean Society of Steel Construction.

Extended End Plate Long Bolted Joint Using Cold Formed Steel Hollow and Concrete Filled Column

Incorporation of the waste glass powder (WGP) as an aluminosilicate precursor material in the geopolymer concrete preparation has been researched for the past twenty years as an alternative to the sustainable construction material because of its significant impact on the reduction of greenhouse gases. This paper reviews the various applications of the WGP in the geopolymer matrix production as binary and ternary source material and the impact of the inclusion of WGP on the fresh and hardened characteristics of geopolymer concrete. More research articles associated with the usage of WGP in geopolymer concrete were published in the last ten years. Collective information on the WGP as an aluminosilicate source material in binary, ternary and quaternary blended geopolymer concrete is not available. This review article sums up the newest findings and developments achieved in the synthesis of geopolymer concrete containing WGP as one of the aluminosilicate source material. The study concludes that WGP could be utilized as an innovative and promising eco-friendly aluminosilicate source material to manufacture geopolymer concrete, thereby providing an environmentally eco-friendly solution for the glass and Portland cement based industries. © 2021, Springer Nature B.V.

A Critical Review of Waste Glass Powder as an Aluminosilicate Source Material for Sustainable Geopolymer Concrete Production

Significant issue in reinforced concrete (RC) structures is corrosion of steel. High alkalization of cement matrix, low permeability, and sufficient cover plays an important role to shield from corrosion of steel. There is a replacement material for steel is fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars as reinforcement. The FRP bars are nonconductive and durable material and they are composited from fibers and polymers matrix. In this study, new technology geopolymer concrete (GC) was used along with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) and basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) bars. GC is produced from industrial by-product materials such as fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag (rich in silica and alumina) and treated as sustainable material. The long term durability of many RC structures affects drastically by the reinforcement corrosion. Main aspect of bond behavior is tension stiffening as it has capability to control the reinforcement to shift the tensile stresses to concrete. This paper evaluates the bond strength between the GC reinforced with GFRP/BFRP and the results were evaluated with conventional concrete (CC) reinforced with steel. The pullout test method was used to determine the bond between FRP and steel bars with the surrounding concrete based on IS: 2770 (part I)-1967. The comparison of bond strength GC with FRP almost same as CC with steel. Study on bond strength of geopolymer and control concrete between fiber-reinforced polymer and steel bars

The use of castellated beams has increased a lot in the past few years in all types of structures. The castellated beam is one of the several methods used to decrease the weight and cost of steel used in the construction. In castellated beams, increased depths can be achieved without increasing the self-weight of the structure. The significant advantages of castellated beams are better possessing bending moment capacity, ease of providing service pipes and wires, and aesthetic appearances. The castellated beams are made by making a zigzag cut through the web according to the desired opening shape and size, and then the two parts are welded together. In this work, static and dynamic analyses of the castellated steel beam section (ISMB 300) are performed to compare deflection, stress distribution, shear Stress, amplitude, and natural frequency. The investigation is done using ANSYS 18. The Castellated beam having a maximum opening of size 0.6h is used for the study. Static and dynamic analysis of steel beams with web openings

The water used in preparation of cement composite is going to be altered through magnetization. When the water is kept in magnetic field the additional hardness elements i.e., Ca, Mg and Fe get separated from water. But this separation cannot be done through normal magnetic field. Hence high electromagnetic diffuser or high-end magnets are needed. In this study Neodymium (Nd) - N52 magnets were used which has an atomic number 60. The water kept under the magnetic field for various time periods. The strength variation and development will be studied for mortar on various edges. © 2021 Institute of Physics Publishing. Investigation on performance of water ion modified cement matrix

Geopolymer concrete is an eco-friendly alternate to conventional concrete that considerably lower green house gases emitting into the atmosphere. Fly ash based geopolymer concrete is reported to become hardened during heat curing process which comes as a major constraint for cast in in-situ applications. In this study, the aluminosilicate materials such as Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) with varying percentages such as 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% replaces the fly ash (FA) in geopolymer concrete was used. Manufactured sand (M-sand) is used as full replacement material for natural sand as fine aggregate owing to its increasing demand. This work aims at investigating the effect of alumino silicate materials on strength properties, characterization and micro structural analysis using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) in geopolymer concrete under ambient curing condition. The SEM and EDX results reveals that, the micro structural properties of fly ash, GGBS materials, CaO, Si/Al ratio, and gel formation have a significant effect on compressive strength and setting time of geopolymer concrete. The FTIR analysis reveals that the stretching vibration of fly ash shifts to low wave number values due to changes in geopolymerization. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) reports show that the C-S-H gel formed around 27–30° 2theta value due to increase of GGBS in geopolymer concrete. © 2020, Springer Nature B.V.
