As the manufacturing sectors are leaning toward additive manufacturing, leaving the traditional methods behind. Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) technique is the growing technique to fabricate the aerospace, defense, and automotive sector components. The major problem associated with the WAAM technique is establishing the process parameters to acquire the defect-free components. In this research work, an attempt has been carried out to establish a wire arc additively manufactured component using Inconel 625 filler. A successful attempt has been made to build the thick slab wall component using Inconel 625. The microstructure analysis was studied in both longitudinal and transverse direction to check the homogeneity. The transverse microstructure at the near substrate region has a cellular structure. The columnar structure is observed in the layer bands between the layers, and the topmost layer revealed equiaxed with a dendritic structure. The longitudinal microstructure varies from a columnar structure in the inter-pass boundaries to fine equiaxed structures between the passes, and at the end, it is an equiaxed structure. Microsegregation in the dendritic core and interdendritic regions was evaluated along with microhardness measurement. The microhardness values along the different layers were increased when taken from bottom to top. Similarly, it increases across the passes due to the formation of an equiaxed dendritic structure. The EBSD investigation was performed to evaluate the manufactured component’s grain size (25.48 ± 61.02 μm), and misorientation angle, low boundary rotation angle (2–5°) and high boundary rotation angle (15–180°). Further, the local dislocation sites were observed through KAM mapping. © 2021, ASM International.

Technology Development for Producing Inconel 625 in Aerospace Application Using Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing Process

The increasing demand for lightweight materials in various engineering and structural applications led to the introduction of aluminum matrix composites (AMC). In this work, a novel zircon sand (ZrSiO4)-reinforced aluminum (grade-LM25) matrix composites were produced using stir casting method, and experimental investigation on machinability based on 18 orthogonal array of mixed level design is carried out formulated by Taguchi. Machining conditions (Dry/MQL), cutting speed (CS), depth of cut (DoC), feed rate (FR) and zircon sand reinforcement are varied in the experiments, and output responses like resultant cutting force (Fr), surface roughness (Ra) and tool wear (TW) were measured. Fuzzy logic (FL), a soft computing technique coupled with one of a multi-objective optimization technique, grey relational analysis (GRA) is implemented to find the optimal cutting parameters. The significant factors are analyzed using ANOVA. The optimum machining levels obtained are MQL cutting environment with a cutting speed of 200 m/min, feed rate of 0.06 mm/rev, depth of cut of 1 mm and 10% zircon sand particle reinforcement. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Application of Grey Theory and Fuzzy Logic to Optimize Machining Parameters of Zircon Sand Reinforced Aluminum Composites

In manufacturing-cell-formation research, a major concern is to make groups of machines into machine cells and parts into part families. Extensive work has been carried out in this area using various models and techniques. Regarding these ideas, in this paper, experiments with varying parameters of the popular metaheuristic algorithm known as the genetic algorithm have been carried out with a bi-criteria objective function: the minimization of intercell moves and cell load variation. The probability of crossover (A), probability of mutation (B), and balance weight factor (C) are considered parameters for this study. The data sets used in this paper are taken from benchmarked literature in this field. The results are promising regarding determining the optimal combination of the genetic parameters for the machine-cell-formation problems considered in this study. © 2021 by the authors. Calibration of GA parameters for layout design optimization problems using design of experiments

This paper presents a correlation analysis-based heuristic for the machine-part cell formation in the context of cellular manufacturing systems. Two new indices, viz. “mean correlation index” for forming the part families and “relevance index-modified” for identifying the appropriate machine cells are proposed. The machine-part cells formed by the proposed heuristic resulted in a higher grouping efficacy (GE) for 14.3% of the test instances gathered from the literature, and it performed equal to the best in class heuristics available in the literature for 80% of the test instances. The method presented in this paper has set a new benchmark GE for 5 of the 35 test instances used by the researchers in the context of machine-part cell formation without singletons. © 2021, Indian Academy of Sciences.
