During the Classical Period (300 BC–400 AD), the Indian Ocean emerged as one of the largest hubs of ancient international trade. For a long period, these contacts were described from a Rome-centric point of view, looking at the connections between Rome and India. However, recent studies have demonstrated that the Roman-Indo connection was only one of the vast medium and short distance trade routes involving numerous regions and populations, exchanging goods and culture. Current archaeological investigations have demonstrated that several minor trade dynamics formed the primary connective tissue of the Indian Ocean. This study attempts to trace these mid-range connections by focusing on the transport of torpedo jars, recently found in several settlements throughout the Indian Ocean. Two archaeological sites were considered: Al Hamr al-Sharqiya 1 (Inqitat, southern Oman), and the port of Alagankulam (southern India). An analytical protocol based on thin sections analysis, SEM–EDS, XRD and GC/MS was applied to a selection of fragments from the two archaeological sites. The analytical investigation carried out on these vessels identified three different ceramic compositions, which distributed differently in the two sites, characterized by a black coating due to a similar bitumen source. The location of the production sites and comparative studies between these vessels and reference materials available in the literature enabled us to cast new light on the routes followed by the torpedo jars, from Mesopotamia to India and Oman. © 2020, The Author(s).

Indian Ocean trade connections: characterization and commercial routes of torpedo jars

The objective of this study is to evaluate the spatial variability of depth to weathered rock in Chennai city using field test data. The database consists of nearly 400 borehole data covering the entire city with stratigraphic information and the same is used in the study. Ordinary kriging technique, which uses the spatial correlation of the data, is applied to estimate the depth at locations where the field measurements are not available. In addition, the variance of the estimated data is also computed. The developed map indicates that the depth to weathered rock in the study area varies from 3 to 30 m from the ground level. The estimated depths to weathered rock are compared and validated with a few selected borehole data and Multichannel Analysis of Surface Wave (MASW) test results. These maps can be used in the ground response analysis, foundation analysis, and design studies. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2020.

Study on Mechanical and Durability Properties of Recycled Coarse Aggregate in Concrete

The rapid development of urban populations and ensuring a limitation of area have impressively altered the residential development of the city. This study mainly focuses on modern high-rise buildings and their structural design mainly governed by lateral loads and this lateral load resisting is provided by either interior or exterior structural systems. The interior system comprises shear wall core, braced frame whereas the loads are resisted by a centrally loaded system. The exterior system comprises of a framed tube, braced tube and diagrid whereas the loads are resisted by elements provided at periphery. It is noted that the selected structural system is to be well utilized in structural efficiency and also in satisfying the design requirements. In our study, the effect of the diagrid system on seismic behavior of high rise building of 18 stories steel building of aspect ratio 4.5 has been considered. The time history analysis was performed by SAP2000. The response of the diagrid structure has been compared with braced tube structure. It has been absorbed that diagrid structure provides more lateral resistant against seismic forces compared with braced tube structure. © 2020, World Research Association. All rights reserved.

Modelling Water Resources in the Ancient Indus Valley City of Dholavira and Lessons Learnt

In order to strengthen the concrete structures, the use of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites has increased recently. Rather, numerous factors inducing the strength of the FRPs composites are unknown. The experimental investigation carried out to study the effect of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) composites by different orientation and coverage area on flexural strength and crack propagation of the Reinforced Concrete (RC) slabs. Five different patterns followed to access the effective orientation and coverage area of the CFRP and GFRP composites. The comparison of the results shows that in the strengthening of the slab, GFRP is more effective. In all the patterns, CFRP/GFRP sheets effectively minimize the crack width.. © 2020, World Academy of Research in Science and Engineering. All rights reserved.

Comparative study on CFRP and GFRP composite in strengthening of RC slab

In our present age, there are numerous applications and devices for converting a standard picture into a picture, which is built from its predominant shading palettes. ‘predominant colors’ are the hues in the picture, in which the pixels of the picture contain the particular shading. These hues are then removed and another picture is then framed from this picture. However, this is just a speculation of the issue. In this undertaking, we dive into much more proficient techniques with a specific end goal to remove the prevailing shading palettes from the picture. In this manner, utilizing a grouping calculation and a significantly more ideal instatement technique, effective shading palette is extracted. The grouping calculation being utilized here is K-implies bunching calculations which is much more effective calculation than the other bunching calculations out there. The bunching calculation groups the pixels in bunches in view of their shading. Dominant Color Palette Extraction by K-Means Clustering Algorithm and Reconstruction of Image

In the present scenario, the elimination of toxic heavy metal pollutants from wastewater effluents has emerged as a severe worldwide environmental issue. Due to the severe and recalcitrant nature of heavy metals, their accumulation occurs in the food web which seriously affects the life forms in the ecosystem and further degrades the environment. Recently, the advancement of nanotechnology has gained much attention towards remediation of heavy metals due to superior characteristics such as higher surface area/volume ratio, spatial confinement and reduced imperfections and resulted in an excellent immobilising capacity of heavy metals due to high reaction rate. This book chapter summarises an overview of variously advanced nanomaterials comprising carbon-, metal oxide (MO)-, zero-valent metal (ZVM)- and nanohybrid-based nanomaterials, and their applicability towards amelioration of heavy metals from wastewater effluents was investigated systematically. The advantages, disadvantages and efficiency of various nanomaterials were also correlated and studied. Additionally, this book chapter discusses future insights and directions for the betterment of nanomaterials concerning heavy metal remediation from wastewater with minimum environmental impacts. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

Remediation of Heavy Metal Ions Using Nanomaterials Sourced from Wastewaters

This study reports adsorption of Methylene Blue (MB) and Basic Fuchsin (BF) on green reduced graphene oxide. Using modified Hummer's method, Graphene Oxide (GO) was synthesised and reduced using Tamaridus Indica. The synthesised GO and RGO were characterized using XRD, UV-vis spectroscopy, TEM, XPS, FT-IR and BET analysis. Through XRD result, the reduction in a peak corresponding to (001) plane and appearance of new peak at (002) plane confirmed the reduction process. TEM results displayed a hexagonal SAED and lamellar structure in RGO with a d-spacing of 0.346 nm in the (002) plane. Effect of variables such as pH, initial dye concentration, dosage, temperature, sonication time, ultrasonic power and frequency were studied and optimum conditions for the removal of MB and BF were found. From the Langmuir isotherm model, the maximum adsorption capacity was noticed to be 238.095 and 243.90 mg/g respectively for MB and BF. Further, the presence of humic acid and various ions decreased the removal efficiency for both the dyes. The experimental results indicated that the pseudo second order suited well than other kinetic models. Among various error analysis, ARE model provided minimum error for Langmuir isotherm (MB: 7.52, BF: 9.82) and kinetic study (MB: 10.47, BF: 6.04). FTIR and XPS analysis indicated that electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, n-πand π-πinteractions played significantly during adsorption process. The facile synthesis and higher adsorption capacity indicates that the material could be a potential candidate for the removal of textile effluents. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd.

Adsorption of textile dyes with ultrasonic assistance using green reduced graphene oxide: An in-depth investigation on sonochemical factors

The influence of different curing conditions on the compressive strength of Self compacting concrete in combination of Slag and Manufactured sand (MSand) is only little known, especially when subjected to steam accelerated curing process.Water immersion curing, Sealed curing, Curing compounds, Air Curing, Curing at site conditions and curing with steam were considered for the present study on the compressive strength of Self compacting concrete (SCC).The specimens were tested for 3,7,28&90 days. Out of the various curing methods, the highest compressive strength achieved is for Water immersion curing followed by Sealed curing (95%), curing compounds (93%), curing at site conditions (89%) and air curing (75%).Curing using steam was introduced to optimize the steam curing cycle for SCC. 36 different steam curing cycles were considered with varying temperatures of 50, 60 and 700C.The treatment period considered for the study were 8, 10, 12 &14 hours. From the experimental investigation, it is observed that increase in temperature and total cycle time led to higher immediate compressive strength. Out of the 36 curing cycles, the optimum cycle is having a temperature of 600 c, delay period of 5 hours and a treatment period of 12 hrs
