Influence of sisal fibres on impact resistance of structural concrete was investigated and the performance was compared with that of Polypropylene (PP) and Steel fibres. Apart from Mono-fibre reinforced concrete (mono-FRC), resistance of hybrid fibre reinforced concrete (HyFRC) containing steel-Polypropylene (S-PP) and Steel-Sisal (S-Si) fibres to impact loading was also evaluated. Fibre dosages of 0%, 0.50%, 1.00%, 1.25% and 1.50% were used. Drop-weight test in accordance with ACI committee 544 was conducted and compressive strength was evaluated for curing periods of 7, 28 and 90 days. Furthermore, liner regression analysis was performed between the compressive strength and impact resistance. It was found that increase in fibre content improved the impact resistance of FRC. Steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) outperformed and Sisal FRC (SiFRC) showed least performance among mono-FRC. Though S-Si HyFRC performed better as compared to sisal FRC, HyFRC containing S-PP at a fibre dosage 1.5% exhibited superior performance. © 2019 The Authors

Impact resistance of hybrid fibre reinforced concrete containing sisal fibres

Groundwater storage augmented by Managed Aquifer Recharge methods in a region will help to manage water supply when there is insufficient availability surface water. The present study was carried out to use the stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen to study the interaction between the surface and groundwater at Managed Aquifer Recharge (Check dam) site located north of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Water samples from check dam were collected at periodical intervals from October 2011 to April 2012 and groundwater samples from the wells surrounding the dam were collected for the period between January 2012 and July 2012. Electrical conductivity of the water samples was measured using multi parameter probe (YSI 556). Chloride is analysed by standard titration method. δD and δ18O were analysed by PICARRO L1102-i isotope analyser. The variation in isotopic signatures of water from the check dam indicated that water stored in the check dam undergone various degrees of evaporation. The relationship of δ18O with electrical conductivity and chloride of groundwater and water from check dam assisted in delineating the wells recharged from check dam. It is identified, that the wells located 1.5 km surrounding the check dam is benefitted by this structure. © 2019, GEOL. SOC. INDIA.

Variations in Stable Isotopes of Oxygen and Hydrogen in Surface and Groundwater of a Managed Aquifer Recharge Site: A Case Study

Consumer demand for the leather products intensifies every year, especially in the fashion sector. With increasing pressure regarding chemicals, water usage, and landfill issues, the leather industries require ongoing research at production as well as effluent treatment level to ensure the stability of the industry. Industrialization made the outbreak of economic growth and energy demand with least consideration of environmental issues, especially in developing countries. Currently, microalgae have shown a significant promise in industrial effluent treatment. Further, the microalgal lipid accumulation potential has a substantial share in meeting the energy demand as renewable energy resource (e.g., Biofuel). Hence, microalgae assimilation of atmospheric CO 2 and pollutants from the aqueous environment has overwhelming interest among researchers for combined treatment of industrial effluents and greenhouse gas mitigation from industrial emissions. This review focuses on identifying the potentials of integrating CO 2 sequestration in tannery effluent treatment by microalgae. Influence of steel fibre, electrical waste copper wire fibre and electrical waste glass fibre on mechanical properties of concrete

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present the results of experimental and theoretical studies on the flexural capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened using externally bonded bi-directional glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites and different end anchorage systems. Design/methodology/approach: A series of nine RC beams with a length of 1,600 mm and a cross-section of 200 mm depth and 100 mm width were prepared and externally strengthened in flexure with bi-directional GFRP composites. These strengthened beams were anchored with three different end anchorage systems namely closed GFRP wraps, GFRP U-wraps and mechanical anchors. All these beams were tested with four-point bending system up to failure. The experimental results are compared with the theoretical results obtained using the relevant design guidelines. Findings: The experimental results demonstrate a significant increase in the flexural performance of the GFRP strengthened beams with regard to the ultimate load carrying capacity and stiffness. The results also show that GFRP strengthened beams without end anchorages experienced intermediate concrete debonding failure at the GFRP plate end, whereas all the GFRP strengthened beams with different end anchorage systems failed in rupture of GFRP with concrete crushing. The theoretical results revealed no significant difference among the relevant design guidelines with regard to the predicted ultimate moment capacities of the bi-directional GFRP strengthened RC beams. However, the results show that ACI Committee 440 Report (2008) design recommendation provides reasonably acceptable predictions for the ultimate moment capacities of the tested beams strengthened externally with bi-directional GFRP reinforcement followed by FIB Bulletin 14 (2001) and eventually by JSCE (1997). Originality/value: The research work presented in this manuscript is authentic and could contribute to the understanding of the overall behaviour of RC beams strengthened with FRP and different end anchorage systems under flexural loading. © 2019, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Flexural capacity of bi-directional GFRP strengthened RC beams with end anchorages

The occurrence of various antibiotics in natural waters poses an emerging environmental concern. Tetracycline (TC) is a frequently used antibiotic in human therapy, veterinary industry, and agricultural sectors. In the current study, TC removal from aqueous solutions was studied using binary Nickel/nano zero valent iron particles (NiFe nano particles) and in-situ NiFe nanoparticles coated sand (IS-NiFe). Removal of TC using bimetallic NiFe particles was optimized with help of response surface methodology (RSM). Using the optimized parameters (concentration of TC: 20 mg/L; NiFe dose: 120 mg/L; time of interaction: 90 min), 99.43 ± 0.98% removal of TC was noted. Further, IS-NiFe was packed in the column reactors and effects of different parameters like flow rate (1–3 mL/min), bed height (3–10 cm) and inlet TC concentration (20–60 mg/L) on breakthrough characteristics were examined. Under the optimized conditions the removal capacity in the column reactor was 1198 ± 40.2 mg/g using IS-NiFe. The column kinetic data were successfully fitted with Adams- Bohart and Thomas models. TC removal efficiency of IS-NiFe in column reactors was tested with TC (20 mg/L) spiked lake water, ground water, and tap water and the removal capacity was noted to be 698.55 ± 11.21, 764.17 ± 6.78, and 801.7 ± 13.26 mg/g respectively. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

Enhanced tetracycline removal by in-situ NiFe nanoparticles coated sand in column reactor

Paddy processing (Rice mill) industries are agro-based industries which discharge wastewater with high organic content, cause nutrient overloading to the environment. Amaranthus palmeri and Sorghum vulgare were used to reduce the excess nutrients from the soil collected from land near a rice mill where wastewater is being disposed. Potted plant experiments were conducted for the selected species and tested for its growth potential and compared with control soil (normal soil). Absolute growth rate (AGR) of 0.52and 1.61 cm/day were obtained for A. palmeri and S. vulgare grown in contaminated soil (APCS and SVCS) which are 2.89 and 1.23 times more than that of the species grown in control soil (APC and SVC), respectively. A positive correlation was observed between AGR and their dry weights (r &gt; 0.685; P = 0.01), and nitrogen removal (r &gt; 0.464; P = 0.01) where it was the negative correlation in phosphate removal (AGR: r &lt; 0.481; P = 0.01; dry weight: r &lt; 0.245; P = 0.05). Significant ANOVA results were obtained for the interaction effect among the species and soil on the nutrient removal efficiency (RE) with respect to AGR and dry weight. It is evident that the both A. palmeri (RE: N = 98.81% and K = 72.32%) and S. vulgare (RE: N = 99.54% and K = 73.23%) are the promising species to remediate the nutrient overloaded soil. © 2018 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 38: 354–361, 2019. © 2018 American Institute of Chemical Engineers

Removal of organic pollutants from wastewater using chitosan: a literature review

Disposing electronic plastic waste into construction materials is an eco-friendly and energy efficient solution to protect the environment. This work is aimed at enhancing the strength of self-compacting concrete (SCC) replacing sand with electronic waste, namely, High Impact polystyrene (HIPS) plastic granules and cementitious material with fly ash. SCC is designed with the optimized binder content of 497 kg/m3 using Fly Ash (30% by weight of cement) and 0.36 as water-to-binder ratio for all the mixtures. High Impact Polystyrene granules are replaced with sand up to 40% (by volume) at a regular interval of 10%. Rheological behavior is observed with the slump flow test for slump diameter, V-funnel test for flow time, and the L-box test for heights ratio, respectively. Strength behavior is studied by performing split tensile strength, and compressive strength tests after a period of 7, 28, and 90 days, respectively. Both fly ash and HIPS aggregate in addition to SCC up to 30% exhibits a minimal strength reduction with a promising performance in workability. Hence incorporation of both fly ash and HIPS granules up to 30% in SCC is a viable eco-friendly technique, with the beneficial economic impact on the construction industry.
